Functionality and form have long been the pillars of design philosophy, yet over time many famous designers have challenged the rightful order of these two very different yet equally essential components. For a long time the focus was on functionality with many designers choosing to prioritise the way something worked to how it looked or felt, but as the use of design and subsequent principles began to change and diversify, so did the general consensus surrounding design philosophy.
Nowadays it’s commonplace to consider both of these key components, from websites, apps or pieces of software right through to physical products and product packaging, design should consist of unchained creativity and meticulous attention to detail in order to allow both function and form to find a natural equilibrium. It’s not unusual to find that one is favoured over, or naturally more abundant than the other, some designs require more emphasis on functionality and others on visual appearance. Ultimately, striking the balance between spontaneous creativity and regimented project boundaries and limitations is what leads to unique and professional, final products and services.
